Cataract Self-Test

What is a Cataract?

Many people don’t fully understand what cataracts are. Put simply, as you age, the natural lens of your eye becomes cloudy (imagine condensation on the side of a glass of cold water). Cataracts are caused by a decrease in flexibility in the lens and the accumulation of dead cells that clump together. No disease or growth specifically causes cataracts, and it’s a condition that just about everyone will experience with age.

Once a lens is cloudy, it blocks light from passing to the light-sensitive cells of your retina. This clouding is called a cataract. While correction, like contacts and glasses, can help in the earliest stages of cataracts, the only way to treat cataracts that have started to negatively affect your life is to replace the eye’s natural lens with an artificial lens.

If you experience any of the following symptoms, it could be the onset of cataracts and an appointment with our board-certified ophthalmologist is your next step:

100% Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery at Carter Eye Center

Cataract surgery has an amazing success rate regardless of whether you choose basic or laser-assisted surgery, but laser-assisted cataract surgery allows for a precisely guided procedure that we believe adds to the safety, precision and accuracy of the cataract surgery.

In addition to an even more precise procedure, laser cataract surgery is able to correct the visual issues caused by astigmatism. That, combined with the advanced imaging provided by laser-assisted surgery, creates an incredibly customized procedure made for you and your eyes specifically. Unique treatment is at the heart of the CarterCares Advantage and that’s why we’re pleased to offer the latest advantages in cataract surgery.

Learn More about the Other Advanced Lens Options

Symfony® Lens
This is the first lens of its kind that corrects astigmatism and provides cataract patients with an extended depth-of-focus, which helps improve their sharpness of vision at near, intermediate and far distances. Carter Eye Center is pleased to offer this technology to Dallas residents.

Crystalens® AO Lens
This Lifestyle Lens is classified as an accommodative lens and is designed to provide excellent vision quality across a more natural range. What does accommodative mean? Accommodation is a process that enables the eye and the lens to work together to adjust focusing power, providing clear vision at all distances.

Toric Lens
A toric lens implant is an excellent way to correct limited amounts of the most common type of astigmatism. While a toric lens is designed to reduce dependency on glasses for distance vision after cataract surgery, many patients still find they need glasses and/or readers for intermediate and near vision.

Multifocal Lenses
This is the most basic of the multifocal lenses, but it still offers a fantastic alternative to traditional cataract lenses. These Lifestyle Lenses offer great focus at far and intermediate distances, but it is not uncommon to still need glasses for reading small print or in low light situations.

Patient Testimonials

Dr. Carter and his staff are SUPER! I had cataract surgery on my left (dominant) eye 5 years ago. I had cataract surgery on my right eye 2 months ago. My eyesight is now 20/25 in left eye and 20/20 in right eye. Thanks so much to Dr. Carter!!! He rocks!

LOVE Dr. Carter! I consulted other doctors before selecting Dr. Carter. We traveled from Destin,FL to have Dr. Carter perform cataracts surgery. He spent extra time going over options. (Options other surgeons had not made available to us.) He is on top of the latest technology and offers solutions for the best outcome possible. The staff is well trained and informative. My husband is thrilled with his results and highly recommends Dr. Carter. I have read other reviews, while we didn’t find any unusual wait times, I would say he is well worth any wait. I find it amusing people want fast food type service for the only set of eyes they have.

About 6 years ago when I was 55 years old Dr. Carter successfully corrected my fast growing cataracts by implanting crystalline lens. The surgery was painless and my vision correction is outstanding. Before the crystalline lens I could not see the big E on the eye chart without my glasses. Now I have 20/20 vision, my depth perception is better and colors are clearer. I enjoy hiking, bike riding, running and paddle boarding. My crystalline lens fit my lifestyle perfectly. Over the last five years, Dr. Carter has been so helpful and attentive with each of my annual eye exams. He has given me the gift of sight. I'm so grateful for his skills and experience.
